Before there was Destiny’s ChildTLC or En VogueSalt-N-Peppa was busy shaking things up in the 80s.

So many of the colorful trends these ladies rocked in their heyday have been resurrected over and over, from gaudy “doorknocker” earrings to retro Reebok high tops and acid wash jeans.

Coming from Queens, New York, Salt-N-Pepa first broke out on the scene in 1985 and became the best selling female rap act. Their bold, unapologetic sound sold over 15 million albums worldwide, and six of their single releases have been certified either platinum or gold in America.

As with many musical groups, Cheryl James “Salt”, Sandra Denton “Pepa” and Dee Dee Roper “Spinderella” usually kept their outfits coordinating, from matching gold rope chains, interesting headgear, shoulder pads and more.

Although the group officially broke up in 2002, the fly ladies can’t seem to stay far away from each other.

They came together for their VH1’s Salt-N-Pepa show in 2007, during which Salt and Pepa chronicled working through past issues, getting back together and gearing up to hit the recording studio. Spinderella also made several appearances on the show.

Since then, the Salt-N-Pepa trio has hit the stage once again performing hits like “Whatta Man”, “Push It” and “Let’s Talk About Sex”, with their first UK show in 15 years coming up next month. They are reportedly recording a new album set to release sometime in 2010.
